Figurative Bust Sculpture

Image
What the world wants vs what I want  Air Dry Clay, paint, and wire. Left Sculpture: 5"X4"x5" Right sculpture 2"x10'"x 3" This work is a reflection of the oppression I feel from the world. The oppression from my own desires. The world likes to place expectations on the younger generation. The expectation of being a good student, going to college, getting a job, paying taxes and then dying. What if there is so much more to life than being the "ideal citizen", or being a "normal" functioning member to society. The human figure sculpture is chained by the waist and crowned by the weight of worldly expectations. This expressed through the spherical shapes. The wire is the choke hold that this world has me in. The second sculpture is split in 2. the humanoid figure is me turning my back on what this world wants for me and on the other side are spheres and cubes that represent what the norm is.

Gregors Room

"Too much time to think" A visual response to the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Largest sculpture measures 6.5 x 4.5 inches  Artist Statement:  The sculptures reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis   by Franz Kafka. The story inspired my heavy use of the color black because in my head the story was a bit unsettling and depressing. Feelings of loneliness and abyss are related to my use of black. When it came to the dark brown used for the bed I could think only of how a bed to sleep in is the only good and bright thing in the room. Many a times people escape life by sleeping and laying in bed but although it is the brightest thing in the room, it is still an ugly murky brown which cannot relate to happiness really.  The stained blanket which looks disheveled just like a cockroach is ragged and not completely one color which represents cloudiness and uncertainty in a life with no escape from 4 walls . Dinner and a Movie

"Don't do the spook show" Materials: Various objects and materials such as a bottle of wine, knives, eggs, cigarette, dice, burnt out candle, matches, playing cards and a loaf of bread. Inspired by the movie ( Nightmare alley Dec. 17, 2021 ).  This image explores the uncertainty of life and the chances one may have when they gamble with their life or the lives of others. Many vices can lead you down a dark path, it does not necessarily have to be alcohol or smoking. But with time if you let these vices control you and continue to gamble with them knowing the consequences... life will catch up to you. In due time. The photograph itself tries to portray feelings of uncertainty  and anxiety just like the movie makes you feel while watching it.

Touch Response Assignment

The Oasis My inspiration for this piece of work is my own world and minds. A lot of the times i get in my spacesuit only to enter into another universe. I find myself escaping reality very often into places only my mind can take me so that I dont have to worry about reality.    "Our Skin is a kind of spacesuit in which we maneuver through an atmosphere of harsh gases, cosmic rays, radiation from the sun, and obstacles of all sorts." A Natural History of the Senses , Diane Ackerman, p. 101 Mindless  When creating this piece I started to wonder that if you go long enough without touching things if your brain would forget how things actually feel. Or if you touch something for the first time in a while will the sensation be so intense that it could be perceived  or felt different than before. “In University of Illinois primate experiments, researchers found that a lack of touch produced brain damage.” (p. 76)
