Gregors Room
"Too much time to think"
A visual response to the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Largest sculpture measures 6.5 x 4.5 inches
Artist Statement:
The sculptures reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The story inspired my heavy use of the color black because in my head the story was a bit unsettling and depressing. Feelings of loneliness and abyss are related to my use of black. When it came to the dark brown used for the bed I could think only of how a bed to sleep in is the only good and bright thing in the room. Many a times people escape life by sleeping and laying in bed but although it is the brightest thing in the room, it is still an ugly murky brown which cannot relate to happiness really. The stained blanket which looks disheveled just like a cockroach is ragged and not completely one color which represents cloudiness and uncertainty in a life with no escape from 4 walls . Gregor being the clock was inspired by the acceptance of his fate being stuck in his room and all the time one would have in the world to either ponder or hate life as a cockroach.
